About Deb Callaghan - Chief Stitcher at Me Made Makes.
Hello there, I'm Deb, and I've been immersed in the world of sewing for more years than I care to count (and I'll keep you guessing about my age!). My journey with a needle and thread began when my wonderful mother-in-law taught me to sew many moons ago, while I was pregnant with my first child. At that time, finding maternity clothes was a challenge, especially for a teenage mom on a budget. So, I learned to create my own wardrobe, complete with elasticated pants that accommodated my growing bump - I felt like I was on top of the world!
After my daughter was born, I continued sewing, crafting adorable clothes for her and later for my son who arrived less than two years after. But as life got busier with work and responsibilities, sewing took a backseat for a while.
However, sewing found its way back into my life when my marriage ended (don't worry, we're still great friends!). It became my solace and a creative outlet during that time. Then, one day, I discovered the Necessary Clutch Wallet pattern, and that's when my passion for bag making truly blossomed. Mr. Grumpy (also known as Andy), who came into my life later, won me over by gifting me vintage sewing machines that needed some tender loving care. I knew he was a keeper, and our shared love for sewing strengthened our bond.
When the pandemic hit and my normal job was put on hold, I took the opportunity to give back to the community. I spent my time sewing scrubs and wash bags for the NHS, which was a rewarding experience and a reminder of how much I enjoyed using my skills for a meaningful cause. It was during this time that I realised I was ready for a change in my career path.
Around mid-2021, as things started reopening, I made the bold decision to pursue a career change and that's when "Me Made Makes" came to life. It started as a venture offering bag making supplies and support for bag makers across the UK, just like me. The journey has been incredible, with challenges and triumphs along the way. I'm grateful for the opportunity to meet and connect with amazing people who share my passion for sewing.
As "Me Made Makes" flourished, I expanded the offerings beyond bag making supplies and now organise tutorials on my YouTube channel, monthly sewcials, and even biannual bag making retreats in my beloved North East of England. It's a joy to wake up every day knowing that I get to do what I love, and though it can be tough at times, the journey has been incredibly rewarding.
